Do you paint the sculpture after baking it or before?

This helped me like a lot. I just got finished with a reindeer I made today and now it is in the oven. I really hope it doesn't end up messed up when I take it out of the oven. I am dying to paint it!

sorry to bother you agian but, i just started my dragon thing and i have the wire frame. the only thing is that i've seen people use foil to bulk out the sculpture to use less clay, and i was woundering if you recomended doing that (i saw the note thing so i decided to ask :P). also for the feathers did you have trouble with them sticking and then ripping? because i made some test wings (to practice) and they ripped and fell apart...

yes deffinatly use the foil it really does help. (need to go back and fix this)

feathers are tricky if you can find a way to use a wire mesh form on the inside do that so they have more structer otherwise prop them up espicaly when baking they have a tendiancy to wilt in the oven. also making them thick enough to have some strength instead of really thin.

those are my suggustions!

ok so foil it is XD

and thanks for the tips, i'll try and figure out a way to make the wire frame for the feathers but, how many feahters do you think i need? (so i know how many wire things to put) i might just make the feathers (not the ones i would actually use) and then compare them to the wire frame to see how many wire things i need....
thanks agian for the suggustions :)

for feathers it depends on the size and the look you want, probably will take some experimenting.

You should use foil on the armature as well so you don't have to use too much clay ;) It also takes less time in the oven when you do that.
